Blog Post # 1: Technology in the classroom.

The world is now globalized. With devices, we can now access all kinds of information and stimulus from around the world from the comfort of our desk. This influences and enhances every scenario we are in and the classroom is no exception. Technology has given tools to teachers and students to look for an answer in a second, to find a video or image that will illustrate a point in an instant and even bring experts that are miles away into the classroom via a video call. In my experience, that has opened the world of information to an extent that is limitless. I believe that thanks to technology, the classrooms nowadays are 360 degrees different from what they were ten years ago.

The ISTE standards are a set of rules design for the modern world. It is the standard teachers and students should aspire to reach in order to be proficient in the globalized world of now and the future. I believe that is really good that these kinds of standards exist, this way we can shape this new world of possibilities with order and diligence.

The standard I like the most is the Empowered Learner, I think this standard helps the individual experience of the educational system. It enables the student to personalize their learning experience by using the technological resources that are available in this era. Also, it motivates students to be autodidact which I believe is really important when you have so much information available. The empowerment of teaching yourself whatever you want is a very necessary skill to develop in order to be competitive and successful.
I would say that a standard that is outside of my skill set is the computational thinker. I think that I need to make myself more familiar with the algorithms and computational methods to solve problems. However, I believe technology will definitely help me understand the world that way in an easier way.

To answer the second question, I do believe that today's youth fit the "Digital Native" term perfectly. I belong to the first years of technology exposed children and I may say that I lived the transition to the digital era as I grew up. It was almost an intrinsical part of my life, which I believe is the meaning of the Digital Native term. As for the "Digital Immigrants" I have observed how they struggle a little bit to adapt to the rapid changes of the digital world, however, I find their life experience with this topic to be of historical interest. I believe that they watched the technological revolution happening in front of their eyes when they were adults with a grown criterion. In the future, historians will value much more their experience and what they have to say about how drastically the world changed in their lifetime. I believe that when I get to teach, I will struggle a little bit too because the digital era changes so fast that I imagine new technologies will arise.

  1. Hi Maria Sofia,
I really like what you said in the first paragraph about technology being a tool for teachers and students to find information and use it to aid in a lesson. I definitely agree that it is much different now than it was a decade ago. I also agree with what you said about how technology is changing so fast that it can be hard for teachers to keep up. I think it is important for teachers to learn and study new technology frequently because it may make the classroom for efficient for the students.

  2. Hello Maria Sofia,
I agree with you on the standards that you like the most. I especially like how you stated it gives the student the ability to personalize their learning experience. This is great because it allows the student to learn the best way they see fit which doesn't happen often with the educational system. I feel as though creativity is one of the most important concepts when learning.
